Samsung adds live TV streaming for Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S II

Nuotrauka

Samsung’s Galaxy range of Android-based devices have always had DLNA support for streaming content, but the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet and Galaxy S II smartphone will gain live TV support the company has confirmed. Samsung Europe told Pocket-lint that owners of the company’s new D7000 and D8000 HDTVs will be able to wirelessly stream live TV to the phone and tablet.

The system will make use of the new HDTVs’ second integrated tuner, with content presumably funneled over a WiFi network to the Android devices. It’s not yet known whether remote streaming will be supported – turning the system into something of a Slingbox competitor – over the tablet/smartphone’s 3G connections, or if it will be limited to use on the same home network.

Still, it sets up another use case for the devices, and bypasses the need for Samsung to fit dedicated TV tuners. No word on any retroactive functionality for previous Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S models.

Motorola ATRIX 4G

Nuotrauka

You have to be a pretty special device to win Best Device of CES, and this year Motorola’s ATRIX 4G took away the coveted crown. It’s not hard to see why, either: the 4-inch Android smartphone not only pairs NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor with a beautiful qHD display, but offers some compelling accessories such as a laptop-style docking station that wants to replace your MacBook Air.

Nuotrauka

Inside, the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 takes price of place, a set of two 1GHz cores paired with a healthy 1GB of DDR2 RAM and 16GB of integrated storage.

There’s a microSD card slot for a further 32GB, and given the ATRIX 4G will shoot 720p HD video and – with its Entertainment Center – is aiming to handle your A/V requirements, that storage potential is very welcome. Connectivity includes triband HSPA+ (as per AT&T’s 4G branding) and quadband GSM/EDGE, along with WiFi b/g/n with support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and the microUSB/HDMI ports. GPS, a digital compass and an accelerometer round things out.

Nuotrauka

Nuotrauka

Motorola’s choice of Android 2.2 Froyo is the first disappointment of the ATRIX 4G’s software experience, leaving Google’s Nexus S as the only Gingerbread smartphone currently on the market. On top, there’s the latest iteration of MOTOBLUR, less intrusive than in its early generations, but still an acquired taste (and a potential cause of delay to future Android OS updates) with its social networking integration, modified UI and resizable homescreen widgets.

AT&T introduces its own modifications and software, including the same limitation on sideloading apps (i.e. installing them from a direct download or memory card, rather than from the official Android Market) that we’ve seen on other Android handsets from the carrier. There are workarounds online, which can address that, and it does introduce a degree of protection from potentially malware-infected apps, but the sort of power users, which will be drawn to the ATRIX 4G, might not really need the carrier’s over-protection.

As for AT&T software, there’s the carrier’s Code Scanner, Family Map, Navigator, YP Mobile and My AT&T apps already installed, along with Motorola-bundled copies of Quick Office 3.0, Vlingo Voice, Blockbuster, Need for Speed and MobiTV. That’s on top of the usual suite of Google apps (Gmail in particular looks brilliant on the qHD display, with the Tegra 2 CPU slicing through any inbox delays we’ve encountered on other Android devices). Some apps can be deleted while others are fixed, though of course a custom ROM would take care of that (and the horsepower of the ATRIX 4G is already drawing plenty of attention from the homebrew Android community) if Motorola hadn’t locked that down as well. Of course, modders have already addressed that with an (unreleased) rooting method, but it’s another degree of frustration that belies Android’s generally open, mod-friendly nature.

The useful additions we’ve come to expect from smartphones, like a mobile hotspot app, are present and work fine, with the ATRIX 4G able to share its HSPA+ connection with up to five WiFi-enabled clients. There’s also DLNA support, for wirelessly streaming content to a compatible display or audio player, though Motorola really expects users to use its HDMI output or HD Dock.

Windows 8 tablets “closer to competitive” than expected: ARM-based Win-slates in late 2011

Microsoft’s tablet ambitions may reach fruition a lot earlier than previously expected, according to the latest leaks from the company, with Windows 8 based slates running frugal ARM chipsets tipped for as early as the end of this year. Business Insider‘s sources claim Microsoft has set around 1,000 engineers to work on ARM-based Windows performance, while a Morgan Stanley analyst has suggested the company is “closer to competitive than some realize.” However, even as the iPad picks up in enterprise adoption, Microsoft is still raking in cash based on the success of the Apple slate.

Nuotrauka

That, according to analyst Adam Holt, is because enterprise users demand virtual desktop support on their iPads for existing Microsoft installations. “Where iPads are being deployed, corporates are often leveraging virtual desktops to provision Windows and Windows apps” he suggests, going on to claim that “MSFT generally gets $100/device in this scenario.”

All well and good, but Microsoft will need Windows 8 to be a sales success if it wants a proper foot in the tablet market. The OS is expected to be particularly tablet-centric, and by shifting away from native support of just x86 processors the power limitations of Intel and AMD processors versus ARM-based chipsets – which are already competing on performance and graphics crunching abilities – the new Windows 8 models should be able to rival iOS and Android slates for battery life and multimedia as well.

Win 8 ..o ant pc ne ?..

NVIDIA Unveils Project Kal-El Quad Core Super Chip

Today at Mobile World Congress 2011 NVIDIA gave myself and small group of media, a demonstration of their latest sampling quad-core chipset code named Project Kal-El. This would be the world first sampling quad-core chipset aimed at tablets and super phones. NVIDIA executives on site stated that they expect Kal-El to deliver 5X performance improvements over their current super chip Tegra 2.

Nuotrauka

The demonstration they gave was running on a development kit that looked like a finished tablet. They started by showing their latest generation quad-core chip decoding a video stream with a 1440p resolution; roughly double the resolution of 1080p and outputting video at 2560×1440 to a computer monitor set to 2560×1600.

Next they gave us a demonstration of a game, which the developer did not have permission for us to name or take photo’s or video off due to copyright’s not being finalized. This demonstration however was incredibly vibrant and visually stunning. The tablet running Tegra 2 was delivering this game at approx. 18-20 FPS while the demo of the game on their quad-core chipset was delivering 50-55 fps.

I did get to video and take pictures of a game by War Drum Studios Great Battles Medieval, which was delivering roughly 3x improvement on the quad-core Kal-El. What was equally remarkable was that War Drum Studio CEO Thomas Williamson just got access to the quad-core development board last night and successfully ported his game for today’s demonstration.

Most importantly however was that NVIDIA executives stated that they were targeting August as the time frame for the availability of tablets running Kal-El and by holiday 2011 for super phones. Which means we may very well have quad-core tablets and super phones in retail this year.

Tegra 2...dar net nepasirode o jau siemet ir 5x galingesnis Kal-El iseis, kitais metais 10x Wayne.. 2014 100x galingesnis Stark.. GTFO !!! pc staliniai jau gali rukyt krc..

Sorami Opens Up SkyDrive’s 25 GB Cloud Storage to Your Android

Nuotrauka

Microsoft's SkyDrive service is a nice chunk of cloud storage—25 GB, to be exact. Now you can view, download, and send your files in SkyDrive from your Android phone with Sorami.

Sorami is not a complex app, but it does the job of connecting to your Windows Live SkyDrive space, showing the files in each directory, and giving you options to view, download, and share individual items or entire folders. Uploading, too, is easy enough, if you don't mind finding a file on your SD card directory and sending it Microsoft's way.

Sorami is a free download for Android phones only. The app is in beta, and the developer seems to think some users might need to create new accounts if their current accounts don't link up. Let us know how Sorami works for you in the comments.

Sony super-fast CMOS promises 17.7MP 120fps video capture

Sony has apparently developed a super-fast CMOS sensor for use in digital cameras and cellphones, which can process images five times faster than its predecessors. The unnamed sensor, The Nikkei [registration required] reports, is able to “convert multiple pixels into signals simultaneously,” and in the process scythes conversion times by 75-percent.

In fact, Sony is apparently boasting of 34.8 Gbps image processing speeds, while video capture reaches 17.7-megapixels at 120 fps. Although you could expect a high-speed CMOS to also drink power at a similarly rapid rate, Sony has also done work to bring that down to reasonable levels.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the new Sony sensors might make it out of the labs and into devices.

LG G-Slate gets priced ahead of T-Mobile debut

Nuotrauka

It’s obviously a day for tablet pricing, with T-Mobile’s LG G-Slate the latest to get a price sticker attached. Retailer MobileCity has put the 8.9-inch G-Slate – aka the LG Optimus Pad – up for pre-order at $699.99, undercutting the unsubsidized Motorola XOOM (and, indeed, what they claim is LG’s official RRP) by $100.

You also get the LG dual-camera 3D video capabilities of course, though the G-Slate lacks the Optimus 3D‘s parallax display for glasses-free 3D playback. OS is Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and there’s T-Mobile HSPA+ support, 32GB of storage, an NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU and a front-facing camera. No word on release date, however.

NVIDIA Tegra Zone hits Android Market, gets full review

NVIDIA’s Tegra Zone app for Tegra 2 based smartphones and tablets has landed in the Android Market, offering the best of optimized games and software for the superphone chip. Over at Android Community they’ve wasted no time in putting together a full Tegra Zone review, along with a full Tegra Optimized Mini Game Guide with all the best titles.

If you’ve been looking at a Motorola XOOM, LG G-Slate or Motorola ATRIX 4G then the Tegra Zone app is one you should definitely be downloading. Titles themselves are still accessed from the Android Market – that makes updating and managing downloads more straightforward – but there are more comprehensive reviews and previews of games like Dungeon Defenders: FW Deluxe, Samurai II: Vengeance THD, Backbreaker THD, Fruit Ninja THD, and Hardwood Solitaire IV, along with teasers of upcoming titles such as Galaxy on Fire and Hardwood Spades.

There’s a full demo of Tegra Zone in the video below, shown on Motorola’s new 10-inch XOOM running Honeycomb. Head on over to Android Community for the rest of the news.

NVIDIA and Epic Games Showcase DX11 Partnership at Game Developers Conference

NVIDIA and Epic Games are teaming up at this week’s Game Developers Conference to showcase the latest advances in the world’s most popular game engine, Unreal Engine 3, which now offers even greater levels of interactivity and immersion.

Unreal Engine 3 – which supports multiple platforms, including consoles, mobile devices, desktops and notebook PCs – now features DX11 capabilities, including tessellation, plus support for NVIDIA® PhysX®, APEX, and NVIDIA 3D Vision™ technologies. As the winner of five Game Developer magazine Front Line Awards, it remains the most popular game engine in the world for those designing the most compelling and interactive 3D games.

The new Unreal Engine 3 real-time demo, being shown during GDC exclusively in Epic’s booth (Business Suite #400, South Hall), was developed using NVIDIA’s GeForce® GTX 500 Series GPUs. It represents Epic’s proposal for what the next generation of gaming will look like and sets a new bar for what can be accomplished with Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 technology. It also showcases the myriad benefits that DX11 brings to gaming, including complex environments and detailed character models with lifelike movement and animations. The demo is further enhanced by the Epic’s collaboration with NVIDIA and use of NVIDIA’s PhysX and APEX technologies, including destruction and clothing modules, which enable realistic character interactions with the environment.

“Thanks to NVIDIA’s excellent cross-platform physics technologies and DX11 expertise, we have enhanced Unreal Engine 3 to bring unprecedented new levels of realism and demonstrate what the next generation of gaming will be,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games.

“Unreal Engine 3 continues to amaze us and represents a generational leap in gaming,” said Drew Henry, general manager of GPU business at NVIDIA. “With the addition of our PhysX, APEX and 3D Vision technologies, it will deliver unprecedented, high-end visual experiences for gamers. We can’t wait to play the games that Unreal Engine 3 will power in the future.”

Epic’s popular Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free version of Unreal Engine 3, will also benefit from these latest additions, providing users with a theater-quality 3D gaming development platform.

Like all NVIDIA “DX11 Done Right” GPUs, GeForce GTX 500 series GPUs deliver the world’s fastest performance for DX11 games in its class. With full support for NVIDIA 3D Vision™ and NVIDIA Surround™ technologies, GeForce GTX 500 Series GPU also provide the graphics horsepower and video bandwidth needed to experience more than 500 games and high-definition Blu-ray movies in eye-popping stereoscopic 3D on a single display or spanning across three screens for an immersive gaming environment. And with NVIDIA SLI® technology, the industry’s most scalable multi-GPU platform, gamers will be delighted by the sheer increase in gaming performance by adding a second GeForce GTX GPU to their PC.

Facts about NVIDIA and Unreal Engine 3:

* Epic Games and NVIDIA have worked together to integrate PhysX and APEX technologies into Unreal Engine 3.
