Overview The car featured on the game's box art: the 2015 Lamborghini Huracán Forza Horizon 2 is a open-world racing game developed by Playground (in conjunction with Turn 10 and Sumo Digital) and published by Microsoft for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 30, 2014.
The sequel to the first game in Playground's spin-off Forza Motorsport series, Forza Horizon 2 brings the fictional Horizon Festival event to Europe (namely Southern France and Northern Italy) with a much larger drivable area (nearly triple the size of the original game), larger player lobbies, more events, and new challenges.
While the Xbox 360 version of the game (developed primarily by Sumo Digital) runs on the same game engine as the original, the Xbox One version features the enhanced engine that powered Forza Motorsport 5, adding an enhanced dynamic weather system, fewer barriers on the road (for a more free-roaming off-road experience), and the "Drivatar" system (where the AI of each opponent car are based on the style of a particular player).
In addition to numerous DLC packs (now including larger Expansions with new locales and challenges), the game received a standalone expansion and promotional tie-in with the 2015 film Furious 7. Titled Forza Horizon 2 presents Fast & Furious, it was made free-to-download for the first few weeks of its launch.
Gameplay Forza's precision game play out on the open road Project Gotham Racing lives on in a way in Horizon 2. Playground tweaked the Skills system of the first game, so that it's more front and center and rewards the player for things other than winning, such as stylish driving. There is also a new Perk system, earned through the Skills system, allowing players to gain XP faster among other benefits.
Filling this new world are over 700 events, and an estimated 100 hour commitment to getting 100% completion. Cross country races, one of the new event types, sound a lot like Burnout Paradise's point to point races allowing participants to ignore the generated GPS route and take any way they want to the finish line. Another new event, The Bucket List, involve finding specific cars parked in the world and getting in them for a unique challenge. These Bucket List challenges are updateable post launch, so Playground can constantly fill the world new ones (presumably including DLC cars).
Forza Horizon 2 will support a maximum of 12 players online. That's up from the 8 that Horizon 1 and Forza 5 support. As with many other games in this new generation Horizon has a seamless link between single player and multiplayer. Car clubs make a return once again and will support up to 1000 people. Car Meets, a new feature, lets players meet a specified location to simply check out each others cars, or for more granular things like share tunes, liveries, and cars. Car Meets will also serve as a sort of in game lobby for setting up events.
The game is based on the technology Turn 10 created for Forza Motorsport 5, including drivatars. Horizon 2 will also feature a weather system, a first for the Forza franchise. In order to create the best lighting possible, Playground also claims to have recreated the Earth's atmosphere for life-like accuracy of the color of the sky.
Downloadable Content [external image] You can never have too many cars. The Xbox One version of the game received numerous downloadable content (both paid and free) throughout 2014 and 2015.
Along with Expansions and simple Car Packs, the game includes three bonus DLC options:
Car Pass, which is a season pass that includes six Car Packs at a discount, with a bonus car (the 2010 Noble M600). VIP Membership, which includes five cars, exclusive multiplayer events, and a permanent 2x bonus to Credits earned. Treasure Map, which highlights every collectible on the in-game map. In addition, players can also purchase Tokens using real-world money, which can be used towards cars, upgrades, and "game accelerators".
Car Packs Each Car Pack unlocks a variety of cars, all of which require no in-game currency on their first purchase. Most of the Car Packs have one car that is free-to-own with their own unlock DLC. There are 19 Car Packs in total.

The Xbox 360 version of the game included 190 playable automobiles to unlock, while the Xbox One version of the game included 220 at launch (some of which were locked away behind DLC). Ten of them can only be unlocked through special Barn Finds.
Throughout 2014 and 2015, the Xbox One version of the game received 104 additional playable automobiles via DLC, bringing the grand total to 324 (excluding duplicates with special liveries).
