Overview

First Announcement

On August 13th, 2010, GSC Game World announced that a full fledged sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : Shadow of Chernobyl was in the works and was slated to be released in 2012. Billed as "the next chapter" in the series by CEO Sergiy Grygorovych, the game was to use a new multi-platform engine built off of X-Ray, that the design team was building from the ground up. No other details were given at the time of the announcement.

On December 9th, 2011, the Ukrainian News Agency (then UkraNews) announced that GSC Game World would be closing down. Rumors claimed the closure was because of CEO/founder Grigorovich's unhappiness with the development progress of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, a claim which was later refuted in a Twitter post by GSC, a post which would later be taken down. Beyond commenting on the rumor, the GSC Twitter also stated "We will do our best to continue. However, at this moment, nothing is certain." Soon after, a number of GSC employees formed Vostok Games and began developing Survarium.

Second Announcement

Following a revival in 2014, GSC Game World posted on May 15th, 2018 that development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 had been restarted, with a projected released date of 2021. This was further confirmed the following day on Sergei Grigorovich's Facebook page.

On July 23rd 2020, a first-look trailer for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was shown as part of the July Xbox Series X event, with the game slated to be a timed exclusive to Xbox Series X and PC, alongside being part of Game Pass at launch. New details were added to the official website, including news that development has shifted from a proprietary engine to Unreal Engine 5. During Microsoft's E3 2021 presentation, a second trailer was shown, showcasing characters, combat, and environments from the game. The trailer included a tentative release date of April 28, 2022, and a new subtitle, "Heart of Chernobyl". On January 12, 2022, the game was delayed to a new release date of December 8, 2022.

In March of the same year, the subtitle was changed to "Heart of Chornobyl", replacing the location's Russian spelling with the Ukrainian spelling, a move that was assumed to be related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine begun in February 2022. As a result of the invasion, part of GSC's development team was reportedly relocated from their Kyiv headquarters to Prague.

Atrodo si karta tai jau tikra. Bet kaip devai skelbia stalker 2 iseis 2021 tai dar ilgai laukt.

Siaip jau buvo darbai prie stalker 2 dar 2011 kas veliau buvo nutraukta deja ir viskas tuom baigesi. Atrodo si karta jau turesim tikra next gen stalker. Svarbiausia kad devai tie patys.

Beja buvo pletkai, kad 2014 august 15, kad GSC pratese darbus prie STALKER 2 varikliiuko.

 

P.S. pamenu kaip STALKER laukiau, dar kai pamaciau awesome traileri 2001ais, po poros metu zaidimu nuomose ieskojau, bet nebuvo :D Vadinosi Oblivion Lost.

Siaip ziauriai patiko Stalkeriai, kaip ir fanas sakyciau.

Sergey Grigorovich talked to the press about the game, yesterday in Kiev. The game wasn't shown.
 

  • They looked back at the trilogy and identified what people loved about it, but also at how developing a game evolved since then, digital distribution etc.
  • Old X-Ray hasn’t been updated since 2011 when Stalker 2’s development was halted
  • They’ve been working on a new engine, X-Ray 3.1 for a year
  • The engine can handle advanced photorealistic graphics, a unique lighting system but also older technologies without affecting the game’s look (I think he means it has ray tracing but also traditional lighting)
  • The engine is multiplatform and they want to finish developing it by the end of this console generation. They hope Nintendo will have a stronger console out by 2020
  • A-Life was difficult to work with. In an era when many gamers did not have Internet, they wanted to make a singleplayer game that felt like an online game, where stalkers have personalities and animals follow their instincts and a food chain
  • Stalker 2 will be an online game, no singleplayer – „why create a simulation, when we can have real people in the game now? Why write NPC behaviour systems, when you can have real people doing what they want. They will fill the game world with their real life, not an artificial one. We just have to give them the right tools”
  • The timeline is not locked, they might even soft-reboot it
  • Players won’t be split into factions from the start. All players have the same common quest. When a players reaches the goal, a blowout will redistribute the Zone’s balance of resources. They hope this mechanic will create dynamic clan systems, with players creating their own alliances and fights. Some will want to maintain the state of the Zone, others will want to update it as it would be better for their alliance. This is based on the Clear Sky faction system.
  • You can be a loner and don’t join any alliance
  • BUT! They still have an AI system, jokingly named „O-Consciousness”. This constantly updates the game world – from the state of the resources, to moving anomalies and controlling mutants.
  • They considered a battle royale mode but they think it may not even be popular anymore by the time the game launches. Faction war has always been popular in the Stalker community, however. Players will have the freedom to create arenas and battle royale modes if they want (I think he means in-game, not through modding)
  • They want to keep the game on for a long time, so they’re aware of the need for constant updates. They need it to bring a steady strem of money, but they don’t want it to be pay-to-win and they won’t split the community through DLCs
  • They will have cosmetic transactions: a lot clothes, player and weapon skins, music for the fireside guitar. There may be a mod workshop.
  • In-game money can be bought with real money. There will be a „contraband store” where players can buy equipment for in-game money, but hunting artifacts will be more profitable
  • The game has perma-death. After you lose three characters, you’ll have to buy new ones with in-game currency. Yes, this means you may have to pay real money. Joining an alliance and making friends will thus be beneficial.
  • They don’t want to reveal the anomalies, mutants and artifacts because they’re still designing them. They claim some anomalies wouldn’t work in a singleplayer game and they want to make surprising new mutants.

GSC GameWorld has released the first official artwork and a music track for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. From what we’ve heard so far, the game is in a really early development stage and targets a 2021 release.

Back in May 2018, Epic Games’ director of publishing, Sergey Galyonkin, revealed that STALKER 2 is now in its design document phase and that the game was announced early so that GSC GameWorld could find a publisher at E3 2018.

Moreover, Galyonkin claimed that the team that is currently working on STALKER 2 is a separate one that was not involved in the development of Cossacks 3, and that some of its members have worked on the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.

As GSC GameWorld confirmed, STALKER 2 will not feature any Battle Royale mode. While a lot of developers have implemented this type of multiplayer mode in their games, GSC GameWorld is not interested in it.

The main inspiration for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is the original trilogy (Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat) and its main feature will be its unique atmosphere. The developers aim to make a really atmospheric game, similar to what the original STALKER was when it came out.

Furthermore, the team targets the newest and the best technology available that will make the game look “really modern.” Unfortunately, GSC GameWorld has not revealed whether it will support Photogrammetry or Ray Tracing, however – and since the game is not coming out anytime soon – we can assume that both of them will be used.

GSC GameWorld is also working on making modding tools so that modders can start creating new content when the game comes out. As always, these tools may get delayed due to development pressure, however we can safely say that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will be officially supporting mods.

Last but not least, GSC GameWorld has no plans for adding VR support in STALKER 2.

  • There is no deadline on solving a cryptic riddle with numbers from the devs, they are ready to wait as long as it takes for fans to figure it out on their own.
  • The devs say that even though they are inspired by various books, games and movies, the main inspiration for the sequel comes from the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy.
  • The main hook for players in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will remain the same, it will be the series’ unique atmosphere, that’s cherished so much by the fans to this day.
  • Among all the mods for previous S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games the devs especially like Lost Alpha DC, Dead Air and Spatial Anomaly.
  • Sorry, folks, there are no plans for a Battle Royale mode in the sequel.
  • The devs say that the upcoming game is “very modern” and it’s targeting only the newest and the best technology.
  • For the sequel, the team has revisited the Chernobyl exclusion zone multiple times.
  • The team leader’s mantra “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 either will be a masterpiece, or won’t come out at all” still remains true for the game.
  • A lot of developers of the original game are in the team of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, every dev is a big fan of this franchise.
  • The team is working hard on making tools for mod developers so they can start creating content right from the game’s release.
  • There are no plans on adding VR support.
  • Sounds like the devs won’t rush the game release as they want to bring to life all the best ideas and concepts they have.

Finally, GSC Game World team said they are answering everyone’s questions. The reason why Antishnaps got such a lengthy interview out of them is simply that he was ‘’very persistent and brave’’.
