Wii Netflix Streaming in 'Final Phase', Discs Shipped to Some Members

While some folks are wondering about the potential of launching Netflix on the DS handheld, the popular video streaming service still hasn't even kicked off on Wii yet. That's about to change very soon, however. Netflix informed IndustryGamers today that the company is now in the "final phase" of getting ready for the Wii streaming launch.

 

In fact, the company shipped out the necessary Netflix streaming discs to "some" of its members to test out. "Their feedback will ensure that we deliver a great experience to everyone when we launch," the company stated without providing an exact launch date for all Wii owners. Netflix is certainly a nice addition to the Wii console, but because of the hardware's limited capabilities, users won't be able to watch HD content. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told us earlier this year that he doesn't see the Netflix launch on Wii having much impact overall. "We are not convinced... that the addition of the Wii to Netflix’s stable of Internet-ready devices will have as significant an impact as did the Xbox 360, nor as significant as we expect for the PS3," Pachter said in January. "In our view, only a small percentage (likely fewer than 20%) of Wii owners have connected their consoles to the Internet, which is required to activate the Netflix service. In contrast, we believe that more than 75% of Xbox 360s are connected to the Internet, and more than 80% of PS3s are connected."
