Lost Planet 2 Developer Chat

Chris C [cc_star], Senior Writer / Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 14:00

Despite the title not arriving on PS3 & 360 until sometime early 2010, Xbox Live gold subscribers already got the chance to try out the demo for Capcom’s Lost Planet 2 last week. US Playstation Blog’s Chris Morell got the chance to chat to Capcom’s Chris Kramer at Gamescom about Lost Planet 2, to discuss how the PS3 version was doing.

In the interview below Kramer talks about some of the issues surrounding the original and late arriving PS3 version of Lost Planet, explaining that it was one of Capcom’s first titles on the system and since then they “have definitely got a lock on the system” highlighting titles like Street Fighter IV & Resident Evil 5 as proof that Capcom have got to grips with the platform. On the subject of Resi 5 Kramer states that is was essentially running on v1.50 of the MT Framework (Capcom’s own cross-platform engine) and that Lost Planet 2 is running on v2.0 which has seen the engine rebuilt, made stronger and bigger and can really utilise the strengths of PS3 (we’re assuming that the Xbox version works perfectly as standard)

Lost Planet 2 Screenshots: Rooooooooaaarrr!

New Lost Planet 2 screenshots reveal another of the many humongous boss enemies in Capcom's sci-fi shooter, the blind roaring monstrosities the 'Debouse.'

While a demo arrived back in September, Lost Planet 2 is not slated for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 until between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011, with a PC version also planned. Check out Garnett's hands-on impressions from CES 2010 for more.

Marcus Fenix in Lost Planet 2?

Appearing on the Xbox Live Marketplace was a video for Lost Planet 2 that featured, strangely enough, Marcus Fenix and Dom from Epic's Gears of War franchise. The two jumped from a flying craft, landed on a snowy field, and helped take down a giant Akrid with explosives and bullets.

What wasn't clear in the video is exactly what this means. Are Dom and Marcus playable characters in Lost Planet 2? Will that cost anything extra? Does that make any sense?

We can't say yet, and will have to wait for the official word. In the meantime, head on over to our Lost Planet 2 page for all the information that's been made available so far.

Monster Hunter Online Frontier was, we think, the real reason Capcom and Microsoft gathered the press in Tokyo for a press conference yesterday. But for everywhere except Japan, the big news to emerge from the event was a collaboration between Gears of War and Lost Planet 2.

As detailed yesterday, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago will be making an appearance in the 360 version of Lost Planet 2. Capcom states that Lost Planet 2 players will be able to make use of costumes for the two Gears characters. How this system will work is unclear at the moment. It's also unclear if the Gears costumes will be free.

Capcom Wrestles With Xbox 360 Disc Restrictions

The PS3's Blu-ray format offers developers plenty of space to fill. But the Xbox 360 doesn't use Blu-ray, it uses DVD. That makes things tricky if a studio is planning to release a multi-platform title like Lost Planet 2.

In a recent interview, Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said Capcom had to cut a significant amount from the game. When asked how development was going, he replied, "There wasn't especially any big trouble. More than those kind of difficulties, the edited content was way too much and dealing with that was more difficult than anything."

"This time, truly, the content that was cut was significant," Takeuchi added, "and at the end, we had to wrestle with disc space."

Takeuchi went on to expand on how difficult it was to make those cuts, saying that it was a situation in which the team was on the verge of crying as they shaved down their game to fit on the disk — though Takeuchi is most likely being facetious. The upside to these cuts? "I think we could be able to add that content at a later date as downloadable content." Everybody wins!
