Rage is a first-person shooter and racing video game in development by id Software. It will use the company's new id Tech 5 engine. The game was announced on August 2, 2007 at QuakeCon. On the same day, a trailer for the game was released by Gametrailers.com.

Information available so far indicates that the game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world similar to that of movies such as Mad Max 2. In an interview with GameSpot, designer Tim Willits revealed that the game is set in the near future following a comet collision with the earth. Influences on the driving and racing gameplay include games such as MotorStorm and Burnout, according to another Willits interview by Shacknews. Players will be able to upgrade their cars with money won from races.

Reports indicate that id is developing Rage with a T-for-Teen rating in mind, and that the Xbox 360, PC, and Mac versions will ship on two discs, while the PS3 version will ship on one Blu-ray Disc. John Carmack has revealed that an uncompressed build of Rage is one terabyte in size.

On July 14, 2008, id announced its decision to partner with Electronic Arts for publication of Rage. Regarding the status of the Linux port after this announcement, John Carmack said "It isn't a launch platform for us, but an executable may still show up." On March 9, 2009 The company's CEO Todd Hollenshead told Gametrailers TV, 'No, it won't be out this year,' when asked about a possible release date.

More Info on RAGE

A few bits of info on Id Software's latest.

By Dustin Rudzinski - July 18, 2009

The latest edition of Game Informer has some new details of Id Software's latest game, RAGE. The developers, recently acquired by Bethesda, give some interesting insight in the development of the game on the four platforms it is being released on, such as the technical hurdles they had to jump.

One of those hurdles was disc space. They had originally planned 3 DVD's worth of content, but had to cut it down to 2 because the disc swapping would have been too prohibitive for the open world type of game that RAGE is. It can be speculated that the Xbox 360 version is the main culprit for this decision, being as PC's and Macs has a hard drive that one of those 3 DVD's could be installed to, whereas the Xbox 360 does not come with a hard drive standard in every unit which would narrow the install base to only those units that had hard drives, limiting sales. That, and the manufacturing cost goes up with each additional disc (which applies to the PC and Mac versions as well). Here's the quote from Id's John Carmack:

(Originally posted on NeoGAF)

"The Blu-ray issue

Since Rage is running on the powerhouse id Tech 5 engine, the developer is having a tough time squeezing everything onto strandard DVDs for the PC and 360 releases.

"We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just... we can't cut it into a third like that," Carmack says.

"We can cut it into two pieces. We've got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn't make an arbitrary cut. But Doom 4 is being set up so that it's almost certainly going to be cut up to three DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they've got the ability because of the way it's structured."

"They also comment about all the versions shown, save for the Mac one (as that is a week behind), and say "they all looked quite comparable."

PC: more anti-aliasing, higher resolution, faster graphical page in times for textures.

PS3: took a lot more time early on learning it to ensure that it is up to speed with other versions, essentially. Carmack says more "sweat equity had to be put into" it and "there's a little bit more theoretical raw performance" that gave them "a little bit more headroom."

X360: easier to get where they are now.

Game is being developed with controller first in mind (X360 pad on PC version demo'ed) because Carmack says, " . . . the largest chunk of our market's going to be on the consoles."

Multiplayer planned, but unrevealed because they don't want to promise something and have to cut or change it before release.

[Rage] won't be like Doom 3, where you killed the bad guy and that was it -- turn the game off and you were done," says creative director Tim Willits. After the main story is complete, players can continue to explore the world, earn all of the upgrades, go for achievements, and compete for the best times on the racing leaderboards."

-Open World FPS using Id's new Tech 5 engine.

-Takes place 80 years after a devastating asteroid collides with earth and kills most of civilization.

-The player controls a character that was part of Project Eden, a program that buried hundreds of pods or "arks" containing 12 people in cryosleep that would aid in rebuilding society once they emerge from cryosleep. The players ark opens sooner than it was supposed to due to an earthquake.

-The asteroid caused mutations to some people so there will be mutants and stuff.

-You get a vehicle that you get to keep throughout the whole game (it appears that way anyways), that you can upgrade and personalize. "Unlike in other games where vehicles are disposable, in Rage, we want your vehicle to be an extension of you first-person avatar".

And here's some more details about RAGE from NeoGAF.

-The hero will be a nameless silent protagonist.

-There appears to be quest like structure to the game, you get quests from people and complete them.

-No good/evil mechanic in the game.

-You can build stuff like weapons and sentry bots with an engineering mechanic, or you can purchase them.

-Regeneration health system so no med packs.

-There are races that you can compete in to get certificates used to purchase exclusive upgrades and parts. There will also be race leaderboards. You can do vehicle combat during the races as well and get bonuses for destroying opponents.

-There will be the ability to play stealthy if that's what you prefer over guns blazing. The article describes a mission that involves guiding a remote control car with a bomb on it to infiltrate an enemy hideout.

-There is a show called Mutant Bash TV that you can participate in, it's like a battle arena that is televised.

atrodo jie turi problemu su DVD talpa,ir jei jiem iseina sutalpint Doom 4 i 3 diskus, tai kaip jie planavo Rage taip pat sutalpint i 3,to jie nebegali padaryt del to kad tai vis del to yra open wolrd zaidimas,ir disku keitinejimas butu tikra nesamone, taigi jie sumazino iki 2DVD,nezinia ar jie turejo kazka iskirpti, isimti is zaidimo, tikriausiai, taciau XBOX niekaip nesusitvarko su 3DVD,ir butent del boxo versijos jie turi knistis daug laiko kad sugalvot kaip vis tai sutalpint ir kaip padaryt kad zaidziant nereiktu disku keitinet,na pc ir mac situ probelmu neturi, pas juos viskas ihdd isiraso ir be problemu eina, aisku ps3 BD isvis duoda cia laisve,o va su x360 problemos.Jie labai noretu si zaidima isleisti BluRay diske, tai buti idealu jiem.na ziuresim kaip jiem viskas iseis nes zaidimas nebus tiesiog fps shooteris ir tai labiausiai dziugina.

Viską įmanoma sumažinti, naudojant geresnes ir naujesnes technologijas. Šiaip aš gyvenime nesisiųsių žaidimų, kurie užima 2 DVD DL, nes tai tikra nesąmonė, jau geriau iš žaidimo atima kažkiek grafikos, nereikalingo šlamšto.

Below is the list of features, courtesy of Shacknews, that the Game Informer piece spilled:

■ An engineering system to craft devices including sentry turrets and RC car bombs, if you have the blueprints and parts.

■ Your health regenerates--a gift connected to your history.

■ Races and missions are available from hub towns.

■ Vehicular combat is a big part of racing, with power-ups and ammo placed around the courses.

■ Weapon upgrades, such as a scope and aiming stabilisers for a crossbow.

■ Alternate ammo types, including a crossbow bolt which allows you to briefly control victims before they explode.

■ Stealth is an option in combat too.

■ A gladiatorial game show named Mutant Bash TV offers big prize money.

■ A car parts system allows boosts to areas such as acceleration, traction and suspension.

■ Other car upgrades include bombs, a magnet to draw power-ups, tire shredders and EMP shields.

■ Multiplayer modes are currently not finalised.

■ One weapon is a three-tipped boomerang called the 'wingstick,' which will return.

■ The PC version will offer higher resolutions, more anti-aliasing and faster texture page-in times, but the three versions are essentially the same.

The reason for priority on gamepad controllers is simply because "the largest chunk of our market's going to be on consoles," explained John Carmack. "I mean, yes, you can use the mouse for it but it's critical that the controller be the way that we design the game."

A problem exists for the Xbox 360 and the storage capacity of the DVD, whereas the PS3 is just fine with Blu-ray. The team would like to split the game into three DVDs but there are issues with doing that. "We've got two large wastelands on there," said Carmack.

"...we can cut it into two pieces" but "couldn't make an arbitrary cut." Curse corporate pride, if Microsoft would just embrace Blu-ray...

Rage is being released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC "when it's fun and when it's done," which won't be this year but could be late 2010.

Carmack: Rage runs faster on Xbox 360

Thursday 30-Jul-2009 5:33 PM PS3 version at 30fps, PC and 360 60fps, id reveals

The Xbox 360 and PC versions of id's Rage sport higher framerates than the PlayStation 3 version, the latest issue of Edge magazine reveals.

In a ten-page reveal in its latest issue, Edge writes that the Xbox 360 version of Rage - which uses id's new Tech 5 engine - matches the 60fps framerate of the PC version, while PS3 runs at just "20-30fps".

It's not mentioned whether the PS3 framerate will be addressed by the game's eventual release.

"The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it," John Carmack told Edge. "The rasteriser is just a little bit slower - no two ways about that.

"The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that's what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3," he said.

The PS3 edition was thought to be the most technically capable of the console pair, thanks to id being able to squeeze the gigantic shooter onto a single-player Blu-ray disc, compared to Xbox 360's four DVDs.

The developer also confirmed that a Mac version of Rage is still in development.

News Story

Carmack on PS3 sweat and RSX hang

Tuesday, 11 Aug 2009 12:38

RAGE

Carmack continues to be honest and open about the development of Rage on multiple platforms.

And specifically iD Software's difficulties on PlayStation 3 development. Firstly, Carmack explains that they had previously decided to hire a specific PS3 specialist, but later realised that this wasn't for them:

"We brought in for a while a guy specifically to be 'PS3 guy' on there and it actually turned out that we're better off bringing up our internal guys to be whatever masters of the technology that we need on there and we've developed a lot of in-house expertise on that."

Then Carmcak comes to the sticky point of PS3 development itself, explaining that it's just not that easy:

"Again it's unfortunate that you have to sweat a lot more on the PS3. It's just easier to make things happen on the 360. There is in theory a little bit more computing power available on the PS3, you just have to work in a different, somewhat more cumbersome, way and the tools aren't quite as good - all this stuff - but it's all workable."

His statement that the PS3 is still workable is surely promising, in much the same way as his promise that all versions of Rage would be at 60fps, despite the PS3 build currently being far behind the Xbox 360 and PC.

"We knew from the beginning that that was our plan; that we're going to ship on four platforms here; we're not going to have this 'finish the game on the PC,' where you have the resources that you want and then worry about cutting it down," Carmack added in an interview with CDAction.

"We keep everything running and up-to-date continuously, like some of the internal things - our build system - every time anybody's checking things in, there's a set of systems there that is continuously grabbing everything building it: everyday we get a report of 'here's all the maps in the game,' 'here's how they loaded on all the platforms,' 'here's the frames-per-second that they're running at,' so we can find out 'Oh, somebody's screwed something up on the PS3!' That's a classic problem, I mean we make regular changes and the PS3 locks-up with the RSX hanging."

Carmack has previously commented on the possible advantages of the PS3's Blu-ray capabilities, allowing the team to store higher resolution textures on one disc.
