Halo Combat Re:Volved

Joystiq has learned that the previously rumored remake of Halo: Combat Evolved will indeed launch this holiday season for Xbox 360 with a full visual overhaul. Sources explain that the re-release is not Bungie's 2001 Xbox game simply running at a higher resolution -- it's being remade with new art assets. While Halo's audio will likely remain unaltered, the controls will allow for more recent Halo configurations.

The Halo: Combat Evolved remake is allegedly being developed by New Jersey-based Saber Interactive, the company behind TimeShift and Namco's upcoming Inversion, but we've been unable to confirm the nature of the engine powering it. We understand that it's something other than the Reach engine.

The Halo: Combat Evolved update, one of two Halo games currently in development under the watchful eye of 343 Industries, is expected to support 1080p resolution and 3D televisions. Details on multiplayer are supposedly still being worked out, but we understand the remake will likely feature online co-op (the original game supported two-player split-screen co-op).

The game is expected to re-evolve on November 15, 2011, ten years after Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the Xbox. Our sources didn't know of any plans to similarly upgrade the recently disconnected Halo 2, but it's hard to imagine Microsoft playing favorites with its biggest franchise.

The secret classic game referenced on the latest issue of OXM UK - and set to be "reborn" on Xbox 360 - is NOT Halo: combat Evolved.

Magazine editor Jon Hicks has told CVG that the title is not from the Bungie canon and clarified: "OXM never claimed it was an Xbox exclusive - merely that it was exclusive to the magazine."

He added: "It has been correctly identified in the CVG comments thread, though. I'm impressed - although I still can't reveal which one of the guesses are right."

You clever blighters.

Halo: CE was many people's first assumption at seeing the mag's next month page, which teased: "You WILL buy this magazine... One of the best games ever made is reborn on Xbox 360."

Most of these guesses were inspired by "sources" who this month claimed Halo: CE is being remade in HD by Timeshift studio Saber, ready for a November release.

However, it's not the game OXM is teasing. Look at the blue squiggly background. What on Earth could it be?

The reveal has now been pushed back by the game's publisher and "is very unlikely to appear in the magazine for the forseeable future," according to Hicks.

The original Halo game is being reworked with new visual assets.

Joystiq reports that previous rumors regarding a Halo: Combat Evolved remake are in fact true. According to the information obtained, the game does not use the original visuals upgraded into a higher resolution, but instead features all new art to take advantage of the 360's capabilities.

It is believed that the remake is under construction at Saber Interactive, most recently the team that worked on TimeShift. The remade installment of Microsoft's sci-fi shooter is expected to arrive on November 15, 2011 – ten years to the day of its original launch.

Pre-order Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and you'll get Avatar armour and a skull, Microsoft has announced.

Here are the details:

Master Chief Avatar Armour: Heroes Never Die, and to honour the 10th anniversary of John 117, you will finally be able to transform your Xbox Live Avatar into the iconic hero by outfitting it with Master Chief’s signature MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armour.

Grunt Funeral Skull: An exclusive, game-modifying skull that changes the rules of the game for an explosively humorous experience, Grunt Funeral sends Halo’s most lowly and lovable enemy out in a blaze of glory. And plasma. And then more glory. Once the skull has been activated, every Grunt’s methane tank will explode like a plasma grenade when killed. Watch out for the Grunt chain reaction!

A new trailer detailing the pre-order items is below, alongside some nifty new images.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a high definition remake of Xbox first-person shooter Halo: Combat Evolved.

It's developed by Microsoft's 343 Industries in collaboration with Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity, and features cooperative play over Xbox Live, classic Halo multiplayer maps re-imagined, a Classic mode that lets you play the original version, new challenges and hints at Halo 4's story.

Microsoft has stressed that Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary's mysterious Kinect features are "cool", but gamers shouldn't get too excited by them.

"I don't think it's going to be something that people need to be hyper-excited about," franchise development director Frank O'Connor told OXM.

"It'll be cool, but it's not something you'd put on the front of the box.

"I don't want to downplay it, but I think of it like this - I use voice on Netflix and it's awesome, and that's what this'll be. Something that enhances you overall experience."

Last month developer 343 Industries said whatever form they take, the Halo remake's mysterious Kinect features will be optional.

News that the game will support Kinect had some fans' nerves jangling, but 343 has offered reassurance.

"Just to let everybody know, the Kinect features we're exploring with Halo: Anniversary are optional and won't affect your core gameplay experience," read the post by a 343 community manager.

"Our mission, from day one, has been to deliver a faithful recreation of the original game, and we remain dedicated to seeing that through to completion."

"We don't even have a date pencilled in for that announcement," O'Connor concluded.

Pre-order Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition through Game or Gamestation and you'll get an exclusive mini art book, Microsoft has announced.

The 24 page booklet contains art charting the series' entire history, cribbed from recent coffee table tome Halo: The Art of Building World put together by Eurogamer's very own Martin Robinson.

If you've already logged your pre-order, fear not, you'll still get the book.

343 Industries' touched-up version of the original Halo launches on 15th November, sporting a (barely) budget £34.99 price tag.

UPDATE: Microsoft has confirmed that Analyse Mode is exclusive to Kinect.

ORIGINAL STORY: Microsoft has revealed how Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary works with Kinect.

During a New York Comic-Con panel (reported by IGN), Microsoft's 343 Industries unveiled the suite of Kinect features included in the HD remake.

Through Analyse Mode, you can scan items in the single-player campaign by moving the targeting reticule over them and saying the word "scan". Items you're able to scan include vehicles, characters, enemies and weapons.

Library is where you use gesture controls to view information about the items you've scanned. Your Library will grow as you scan more items.

And lastly, you can use your voice to switch the visuals from remastered to classic and vice versa, reload and throw grenades.

Do Halo Anniversary's Kinect features provide a glimpse into how Halo 4 will integrate Microsoft's motion-sensing tech?

In August Microsoft stressed Halo Anniversary's Kinect features were "cool", but said gamers shouldn't get too excited by them.

"I don't think it's going to be something that people need to be hyper-excited about," franchise development director Frank O'Connor said.

"It'll be cool, but it's not something you'd put on the front of the box. I don't want to downplay it, but I think of it like this - I use voice on Netflix and it's awesome, and that's what this'll be. Something that enhances you overall experience."

Earlier, 343 said the Halo remake's Kinect features would be optional.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced that the Hang 'Em High map remake, High Noon, is included with Halo: Anniversary.
