EA: Mirror's Edge is 'an important franchise,' nothing to announce - is a sequel still possible?

Yesterday, we posted a story regarding a Swedish article which claimed that EA rejected a Mirror’s Edge 2 prototype pitched to it by DICE. The validity of each and every rumor surrounding the phantom sequel is questionable, but previous statements from EA Games boss Frank Gibeau have offered little hope for Faith and her incorrigible desire to leap between seashell-white skyscrapers.

 

However, a ‘representative for EA’ (read: PR) has issued a statement to 1up which calls Mirror’s Edge an "important franchise," notes that DICE is currently focused on Battlefield 3, and declares that the company has "nothing further to announce."

 

The ambiguous response specifically reveals nothing, but by not confirming that Mirror’s Edge 2 is off the table, EA is, at the least, stringing us along, and at the most, suggesting that the sequel holds enough potential to creep back into existence post Battlefield 3 (if we’re lucky).

The popular music video game Guitar Hero is being axed by the company that publishes it after nearly six years.

 

Activision Blizzard, which makes the Call of Duty and World of Warcraft series, says it's ditching the franchise because "the popularity of music-themed video games has faded".

 

The company is also cutting 500 people from its global workforce of 7,000.

 

Activision Blizzard has revealed that other games it's cutting will include DJ Hero and True Crime.

Mirror's Edge 2 is still in the works, and will more than likely use the Frosbite 2 engine, according to EA Games President Frank Gibeau.

Well, it seems the Frostbite 2 engine -- used by Battlefield 3 to deliver some of the most realistic visuals yet seen in games -- is a part of those ideas. Gibeau told Gametrailers Geoff Keighley, "We love that franchise. The DICE guys really created something special the first time around. You've got to have a big idea to be able to do the next one, and that's what we're working on."

The new Mirror's Edge will take on more of an 'action adventure' guise than its predecessor, with unrevealed innovations and gameplay that could only be achieved on next-gen hardware.

 

That's according to Patrick Söderlund, exec VP of the EA Games label, who told CVG at E3 today that the new game will refocus the Mirror's Edge formula while staying true to the core of the original.

"What I can say is we're taking more of an action adventure approach on it than maybe before," Söderlund said. "First-person, running redominantly - this will be more of an action adventure game, but true to what the first one was to a large extent."

 

Söderlund said EA has considered a number of Mirror's Edge concepts over the years, but settled on one that would require more power than current consoles could offer.

 

"The interesting part is that it was a game that could only be built in [next-generation] Gen-4 and that was cool - I liked that. Because what they're doing, you can't do - it's not possible on the current generation," said Söderlund.

 

"It is obviously something that we know a lot of people want and fans have asked us for for many, many years. But more importantly, it's a game that DICE wanted to build. They think that the first one was a great first attempt but it didn't really deliver on the true vision that the guys had for that IP," he admitted.

 

"If you do the same thing again then it's not going to work. You have to be very, very honest with yourself and look at what went right and what went wrong. It's obvious that people loved the art direction, loved Faith and loved the idea of what you did in the game.

"I think we missed completely on the game being too difficult, people keep falling down and the notion of constantly running away wasn't maybe greatly perceived. On top of that there were a bunch of other problems with it, but again we look at what's great with it, we do more of that and we fix the things that were broken."

 

The game was officially unveiled at EA's press conference on Monday for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, but Söderlund hints at more major revelations to come.

 

"On top of that, even more so we add new things to it," he continued. "The innovation... I can't talk about. I wish I could! Because I'm excited about it. The ID and vision for the game, coupled with the timing is what made it make sense. That's why we are making it."

New details on Mirror’s Edge 2, announced at last year’s E3, have reportedly leaked via RocketChainsaw, the website of NeoGAF admin EvilChildren, which claims to have seen “video content of the in-development game.”

Get the information below.

  • The game is being targeted for a 2016 release across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac.
  • The E3 2013 teaser was “entirely real-time and generally unscripted,” including combat. The in-development build matches up graphically and mechanically.
  • The game is a total reboot of the series. The core goal is to create a “living, breathing city” in a open world for players to explore.
  • The open world environment includes a “persistent, ‘always online’ component,” where the open world is considered a “multiplayer ‘playground’” where other players can seamlessly drop-in or out and freely choose their level of interaction with other players in the game world. Journey‘s online feature was given as an example.
  • Other multiplayer components include co-op and competitive modes, such as time trials.
  • New enemies, including some AI opponents on equal footing to Faith, are being made. Additionally, there’s the standard cannon fodder Protectors, melee combat expert Sentinels, and armored gun wielding Enforcers.
  • Faith will not have a gun.
  • Feedback from the first game’s combat system has helped shaped the second’s, which has seen heavy revision. There is no more gun-play or one-button combat, but a “deeper system that emphasizes speed and fluidity.” Environment interaction is a key feature to combat, with Faith being able to push, punch, and kick enemies out of the way, and over ledges, tables, and railings.
  • These physics-driven interactions are combined with 1-2-3 punch and kick-style combos, wall running, flips, and other martial arts moves, as well as brief grapples. From time to time, a third-person take-down move will be used when an enemy is beaten, and “adaptive slow motion” is used “very sparingly” to highlight certain sequences.
  • Mirror’s Edge 2 is being considered a racing game at heart, as the team is focused on creating a game all about parkour, speed, fluidity, and mastery of the environment. The combat changes are being made to seamlessly integrate encounters and the combat system into the feeling of speed and mastering parkour.
