Q&A with Game Director Nick Cantin

A Focus on Focus

Have you visited the Official Thief forums lately? Since Thief’s unveiling a few weeks ago, they’ve been buzzing with excitement and speculation, members new and old scrutinizing, searching, studying, analyzing each Thief update with the dedication, detailed eye and concentration of… well, Garrett himself.

Except, Garrett has an edge.

In Eidos Montreal’s upcoming Thief, that edge is due to an event that occurs earlier in the game that leaves Garrett with a highly increased ability to focus. This new focus ability has been a hot topic on the Thief forums of late, so I chatted with Game Director Nick Cantin for more information.

1. So, Nick, tell us: what is the focus system?

In the game, the Focus system is Garrett’s ability to focus and speed up his reaction times. From a game design perspective, Focus is a layer that empowers the player and empowers Garrett. But, it’s not something that you’re forced to use. It’s something that you manage, something that is one of the tools at Garrett’s disposal that he can use to tackle the various situations he is confronted with.

2. How does Garrett get his focus ability?

Garrett gets his focus ability as part of the main story due to an even that occurs early in the game – but I don’t want to spoil anything so can’t say any more than that right now.

3. Can you tell us how the focus system works?

Focus is something that you have to manage, that you have to accumulate. The player will have to choose when the best time is to take advantage of Garrett’s Focus, as he has many different ways and abilities that Focus can be used. It’s completely up to the player to decide and manage how Focus is used in the game.

4. What things besides combat and lock picking can you do with focus?

It depends on how you decided to use it, but for example some things like combat, marksmanship, lock picking and pickpocketing have the ability to be enhanced by Garrett’s focus - if you choose.

5. So is the focus system related to navigation, does it tell players where to go?

No, not necessarily. We don’t want to kill that exploration by giving the player too much information or too many hints. It is a tool that can help the player, but it’s certainly not something that will hold your hand or guide you through the world.

6. Is focus an unlimited power?

No, Focus is limited and has a cost. As a player you will have to manage it wisely when you accumulate it, and really think hard about when the best time is to use it.

7. Is the focus system optional? Can it be turned off or left unused?

Presently, it’s the completely the players choice to use Focus or not. If players want to challenge themselves to stick to Garrett’s basic abilities, they can.

8. Some fans have been wondering if the inclusion of a focus system might remove the challenge found in the previous Thief games. Is this the case?

No, not at all! Garrett’s Focus ability is there to empower the player when they need it, to give Garrett an edge over those surrounding him - but it comes at a cost. It’s all about giving choice to the player, but it will not break the game balance.

9. Is the focus system tied to object highlighting?

Presently, the object highlighting system uses a very similar mechanic to what was used in the classic Thief games. While you can use focus to add to that vision, if you choose to play without it, it still feels like a classic Thief game.

10. Can object highlighting be turned on/off?

All I can say now is that Thief purists will have options - those types of players will definitely be pleased.

Awesome! Thanks Nick!

Games on the PlayStation 3 can often look quite similar to their PC counterparts, though PC versions do tend to see some extra bells and whistles. But now with the PS4′s arrival, developers can implement visuals that we have yet to see on current-generation hardware.

Thief is one such PS4 title that is bringing a high level of visuals matching those of the PC release. Producer Stephane Roy told Videogamer that Thief on Sony’s new console will look “really, really close” to the PC game.

“For Thief, everything started on PC. So for example, all the interface, the menu and stuff like that, we want to adapt it [for next-gen consoles]. But for a visual aspect – especially for a game like Thief – it’s not a question of pushing more polygons, [or] now I can have 200 enemies at the same time and not just 100 enemies. So on our side, it’s more a question of gameplay, the movement, stuff like that. I think with the next-gen, yeah visually speaking, with the high-end PC and next-gen it’s going to be really, really close, honestly.”

Following Roy’s comments, one Square Enix spokesperson said that Thief is up and running on the PlayStation 4 and that it looks “almost identical” to the PC version.

However, Roy did hint that the PC version may get a slight bump with certain video cards:

“Maybe we are going to push a special feature with the PC because of working with the video card and stuff like that, but it’s not like 10 years ago where the difference was huge.”

paskutinio deus ex kurejai kuria nauja Thief. ir nebus dabartiniu konsoliu portu.. :working:

na jau turetu but daug grazesnis uz Deus Ex HR tada, nes deus ex tai maziausias reiklus is pc zaidimas isleistas per paskutinius metu aplamai.

kurejai nori next gen konsolese ne 60fps gaut o geresne fizika ..na del to viskas ok ..tiesiog zaidimui kurejai naudos Unreal 3 "sena" engine. o zaidimus bus jau tik next gen .. :npoker: ir dar priedo nesugebes su next gen konsolem istempt 60 fps. na kokia ten fizika.tik tiek ka gali unreal 3 nieko daugiau per labai neispesi. vis del to mokintis dar kurejam reiks kaip daryt gerus teisingus portus next genam. kai tuo tarpu pc vez ta zaidima su senu dual coru ,sena vidutine gpu ir 2gb ram tikriausia. :melvin:

The next-gen console versions of Thief will likely be capped at 30 frames per second, Eidos Montreal producer Stephane Roy has suggested, telling VideoGamer.com that he would "prefer to have better physics" in PS4 Thief than a smoother "60 frames per second frame rate".

"For a shooter it's a no-brainer. The higher the frame rate is, the better it is." Roy told us, when asked if his team would be striving to achieve a high frame rate on next-gen consoles.

"On my side, the type of game I'm going to work on... I don't want to put extra pressure on the team just because we can do it if it's not a necessity. If the players see nothing different, maybe I would prefer to have better physics and stuff like that and not this 60 frames per second frame rate."

"We worked a lot to improve the tools for the artists and the designers. The game is big, we have to produce a lot of assets. Light and shadow gameplay is amazingly important on our side so we worked very hard to boost the rendering aspect of the engine, how to deal with the light. So I think it's a question of flexibility. With Unreal it's possible to do it. So yes, it's Unreal 3, but [there are] some modifications."

Ech, su savo adaptacijom i naujoves.

“No doubt on our side the PC version is extremely important. Just playing Thief with a keyboard and mouse it’s different so we must make sure we support that well. For making the PC version we think like a PC gamer, for consoles it’s a different type of beast. It’s one of our goals to make sure that the PC version isn’t just a copy of the console version.”

- Edios Montreal’s Stephane Roy

AMD reklamuoja Thief PC versija..tikriausia isnaudos kokius 3 corus is pc cpu ..so hardcore..Unreal 3 engine next gen konsoliu zaidimas. :poker:

Nuotrauka

Our dear friends over at PCGamesHardware revealed that the PC version of the upcoming Thief game will be handled by Nixxes Software. During AMD’s press conference at Computex in Taipei, the red team announced that Thief PC is part of its Gaming Evolved program, and that the port is handled by Nixxes Software.

Even though AMD did not share any specific PC features for the new Thief game, there is a high chance to see the company’s TressFX technology being used to it. PCGamesHardware hints at some other techniques too, such as enhanced depth of field or Diffuse HDAO.

Thief will be powered by Unreal Engine 3, and it will be interesting to see whether the game will be able to handle more than three CPU cores. As we’ve seen in the current-gen era, all games that are powered by Unreal Engine 3 are optimized for tri-core CPUs. PS4 and XBOne come with eight CPU cores, so we can at least expect this title to take full advantage of four CPU cores.
