Jagged Alliance: Back in Action Interview

We had the pleasure of getting a few questions answered by Dominik Mieth, Game Designer at Coreplay.

What inspired you make this game?

We have some big fans of the original JA2 on the team and were happy to not only work on this particular IP but also to get the chance to develop a military themed game with tactical depth.

While developing the game, what was the hardest issue(s) that you came across?

Walking the line between creating a sequel that’s true to the original on the one hand and refines the original’s turn-based combat system on the other. Design challenges like this are always hard to complete when you work with a fixed budget and schedule since it leaves little room for errors.

What was your "best moment" during development?

Gathering a big pile of military themed stuff and discussing every aspect of the game while holding a replica AK47 or M16.

Were you able to incorporate all of the ideas that were proposed?

So far, yes. But we are still only a few months into development. So there is still a constant stream of new ideas, input and requests from various sides.

In the end it’s not so much about how many ideas you are able to pack into a game but how well you can make those ideas that you can get in work together.

If the answer to the previous question is no, would you add those other ideas through DLC or make a possible sequel?

Once you finish a game you will always end up with a ton of ideas how to improve on what you got.

I guess DLC is less likely since JA lives from offering the player a big world and lengthy campaign and not just single maps. A sequel might be much more interesting especially if we get the chance to come up with a new story, setting and characters!

Can you provide any insight into your next title?

Currently all of us are fully involved in Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, there are no plans beyond that at the moment.

Any special advice for the fans playing Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. Something like a special gameplay tactic or a hidden gem?

It’s too early to talk about hints on how to play the game. So far we have not even hit alpha and many of the details that will define the combat system still have to be implemented. Ask again in a few months!

How do you like the PC as a platform for game development?

We love it! It’s nice to take full advantage of all features of our technology and not having to worry about every frame or byte of RAM every time. On the PC every user can find his own sweet spot between performance and visual quality using the ingame options to tweak performance.

Any advice for people starting out with game development? It does not matter what platform they are using.

Education wise look for something that gives you a solid background and try to hone the skills you need specifically for game development on your own. Start with simple projects but try to finish what you start. Attention to detail and the ability to wrap things up are far more important than having lots of ideas and creativity.

JA gryzta.....

..seniem oldschooleriam, visiem JA fanam, pagaliau naujas JA arteja ir demo jau cia

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action Demo

bitComposer Games has released a demo for their upcoming strategy game, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. This demo contains the game’s tutorial and the ‘Laboratory in the Orta-Swamps’ level, weights around 354MB and supports German and English voices, as well as English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian subtitles. bitComposer has also warned us that the demo is ‘REALLY, I mean REAAALLLY, hard. The Level included is on maximum level of units‘. Sounds ideal for all Jagged Alliance fans, right?

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action takes players to the fictitious country of Arulco, where a ruthless dictator has seized power and only a small group of rebels stand to resist him. Tasked with freeing the island from the dictator’s iron grip, players will command rebel and mercenary forces while using tactical, diplomatic and economic tools to keep troops supplied and ready for the next flight, all while commanding them directly in nail-biting battles.

Back in Action features an innovative “plan & go” combat system that combines real-time strategy (RTS) with turn-based elements to guarantee that the intricacies of tactical warfare are rendered in dynamic, exciting gameplay.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is currently slated for a February 10th release on the PC!
