After what has seemed like an endless amount of hints and tweets, Namco Bandai has finally unveiled the next entry in the Soulcalibur series. The company made an announcement at their “Level Up” press conference in Dubai just moments ago. Hisaharu Tago took the stage to deliver the news. A trailer is currently being shown, which we’ll try to bring to you shortly.

Namco Bandai has only shared a few details, such as an enhanced battle system. The title will take place seventeen years later in the timeline and will star main character Patroclus.

A 2012 release window was provided, but additional information will be put on hold until E3.

The game, set 17 years after Soulcalibur IV, features guest characters, Project Soul producer Hisaharu Tago told Christian Donlan for Eurogamer.

The main character is Patroklos, son of Sophitia. Patroklos is "inspired" by the gameplay of Sophitia, but is "sharper" and "more agile". He has new moves, but they're all inspired by Sophitia's.

V takes the Siegried ending of IV and builds upon it. Seigfried, now 39 years old, no longer wields the Soul Calibur sword.

V is described as a "generational shift", complete with new characters, but SCIV characters will return. "SC 1-4 was a continuous story," Tago said. "We want to make a generational shift with a new story this time."

The Soulcalibur series is famous for the inclusion of characters from other universes, such as Link from The Legend of Zelda and Yoda from Star Wars. Will other non-Soulcalibur characters feature?

"Difficult question," Tago said. "We will have guest characters as we did with Star Wars. Please stay tuned for more information on that."

V marks a shift from two-handed swords to short swords, Tago announced. The story includes "the enigma as to why the swords have become short swords".

The game's new fighting style is described as "lighter, sharper, and more elegant". The online mode has been improved with new features. "Gameplay in IV could be a little heavy, particularly when you were online – we wanted gameplay that was more fast and reactive," Tago said.

On the shift in gameplay: "Maybe the hardcore fans will be afraid that we lose the core of the gameplay, but that's not the case. And for new players it's nice to have gameplay that is more continuous – you don't need to wait as much between moves.

"There is quite some change in the gameplay from SCIV. The pace of the game has been improved, and the combos will be easier to perform, and the moves will be easier to pull out."

Elsewhere, Tago confirmed the create a character feature from previous games in the series returns, but refused to divulge details.

Project Soul has announced three new characters for upcoming fighting game Soulcalibur V.

They are Zwei, Natsu and series stalwart Ivy, now 49-years-old.

Producer Hisaharu "Heath" Tago said on the PlayStation Blog that fans need not worry about Ivy's age – she stopped ageing at 32. "In a way, her eternal existence is promised," Tago said.

Natsu, on the other hand, is only 17. She's an apprentice of Taki, and focuses on speed and evasive manoeuvres. "After you use Natsu, you can discard any prejudice you may have that she is simply a replacement for Taki," Tago said, before confirming Taki is still alive.

And finally, the mysterious Zwei. His short sword is not his main method of attack, Tago said, mysteriously. "The clue is Zwei means 'two' in German. Does that mean there must be a 'one' as well?"

A new gameplay trailer showing off the triumvirate is expected soon.

In May Project Soul said it wanted Soulcalibur V to have at least 26 characters – half new and half returning.

The main character this time is Patroklos, son of Sophitia. Like his mum, he uses a short sword and the Arcadia Shield.

SCV is set 17 years after SCIV. Siegfried, who is 40-years-old, uses the Requiem weapon he used in SCI and SCII.Nuotrauka

Ezio Officially Confirmed as Soul Calibur V Guest Fighter

Namco Bandai has joined forces with Ubisoft to bring Ezio Auditore da Firenze to Soul Calibur V, as previously rumoured a few days ago, seeing the iconic assassin bringing his trademark weapons to the stage of history, including a Roman Longsword, Stiletto, Crossbow, hidden gun and of course, his hidden blade.

“The entrance of Assassin’s Creed into the Soul Calibur universe is an historic meeting of two of the most revered and influential game series,” said Olivier Comte, Senior VP at Namco Bandai. “Ezio has captured the imaginations of millions of fans around the world, and it will be very exciting to see how his lightning fast moves stand up to the mighty swordplay of Soul Calibur’s finest.”

Pre-order bonuses and a European Soul Calibur V Collector's Edition have also been unveiled today, with a special book box planned, which includes a collector's edition of the game, a high quality art book, an original soundtrack CD, a making-of DVD, original artwork on parchment signed by the dev team and a DLC voucher for Black Knight and Paladin armour sets.

Finally, anyone pre-ordering the game from a selected retailer can also get their hands on an additional character for the game: top-hatted madman Dampierre from Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, who will be available to download from day one when you pre-order. Check out trailers for both Ezio and Dampierre below, as well as several screenshots, of which there's 13 new ones showing Ezio, the Black Knight and Paladin armours and Dampierre to look at in the gallery.

Soul Calibur V is out on February 3rd, 2012 in Europe, so one would therefore assume that it's coming to North America on January 31st, 2012.

Soul Calibur V Arcade FightStick Revealed

Peripheral manufacturing experts Mad Catz have unveiled the Soul Calibur V Arcade FightStick Soul Edition, which unsurprisingly is being released to tie in with the release of Namco Bandai and Project Soul's swords and shields brawler, and has the usual high standard finish you'd expect from a premium arcade stick.

Mad Catz's MarkMan was on hand in the Shoryuken forums to offer up a little more detail on the Soul Calibur V stick, noting that it has a translucent body and the so-called 'Edge' bezel for that added Soul Calibur style, as well as artwork depicting the Soul Edge and Soul Calibur swords.

For those in the know, the button layout and stick placement follows the Namco Noir configuration favoured by Tekken 6 arcade panels, which is also reminiscent of the SEGA Astro City layout. Erm...right. The stick also has stainless steel screws, as MarkMan notes: "we've listened to your feedback and have noted that rusty screws are not appealing." Yes.

The Soul Calibur V Arcade FightStick Soul Edition will be releasing in North America, Europe and Japan in January 2012, while Soul Calibur V itself will be launching on January 31st, 2012 in North America and February 3rd, 2012 in Europe. Have a look at the Mad Catz Soul Edition stick below.
