It's been over a decade since the last entry in the MechWarrior series, one that's prided itself on epic mech combat in the Battletech universe. Piranha Games' is currently hard at work on bringing it back with the free (microtransaction-based) MechWarrior Online, due out soonish.

The studio is inexperienced in working on its own big-budget titles, so it'll be interesting to see if they rise above or not. The good news -- after having chatted with president Russ Bullock and creative director Bryan Ekman (both longtime fans) -- is it's sounding promising.
Gameplay

The game is absolutely being designed with the hardcore MechWarrior fan in mind, right down to the controls, lore, and deep gameplay. However, for those brand new to the series and curious (as you would be, it being free and all), they've got some accessibility and a steady learning curve in mind.

"Gameplay is a little bit faster," Ekman says. "It's a lot more deep; we have a whole set of roles players can dive into. As they learn how to play their role, they uncover more efficiencies and better strategies."

More, players who don't wish to join up with "lances" (squads), factions, or corporations don't have to; lone wolfing is actually going to be encouraged to some degree (especially post-launch) for those who prefer the play style, or simply are in the mood for something less serious. Bounty hunting and other concepts will be introduced at some point to facilitate this.

Bullock notes there's an emphasis at the studio on making lances productive and efficient. Asked how teamwork will be encouraged, he says there will be rewards for fulfilling your role, but no punishment for not. Between that and no mention of indicators, we're a little worried for the time being, though the 12v12 player count makes it less of a concern.
Controls

Controls will be traditional for the series, so you can expect torso twisting, weapon grouping, group firing, jump jets, and throttle, to name a few. Besides the standard keyboard and mouse setup, a large number of joysticks and other input devices will be supported, as will customizable controls.

Varied environments

MWO is being designed on CryEngine 3, and will support DirectX 9, 10, and 11. Unfortunately we've only concept art to share as of yet, but Ekman is quick to assure this won't be yet another brown shooter; he describes it as "modern" and "gritty."

Environments, excitingly, will be varied, from ice worlds to urban landscapes to jungles to deserts. A mix of open and tight environments is promised, and some have multiple levels -- and this is just at launch. A nice touch: temperature of the environments influences overheating mechanics.

Improvements

While it may be easy to remember the old titles with rose-coloured glasses, Bullock and Ekman have no hesitation in pointing out their flaws and describing how MechWarrior Online will differ for the better.

"The fact we can do high fidelity graphics allows us to make much more engaging worlds, and lets players use a much higher level of strategy," Ekman remarks. "Previous games were very open; you could see enemies coming from great distances, but now we are able to make the battle really personal, and have [you] get up close and fight in detailed city environments and landscapes. The technology shift has allowed us to evolve and expand on the strategies used by players during gameplay."

"Before it was a fairly unapologetic arms race to the heaviest of mechs, but our design will be quite different," explains Bullock. "It won't be about putting in countless hours until you finally get your 100 tonne mech; you might very well go there day one, but you might well find many people who choose to stay in the Scout mech."

Coming Soon to a PC Near You

Does Piranha have what it takes to deliver a "true" MechWarrior game? Only time will tell for sure. MechWarrior Online is expected to the launch the second half of 2012.
