Sony’s Xperia Play (aka the “PlayStation Phone”) is going to release this month in the U.K., six days after the launch of the Nintendo 3DS. Speaking with MCV UK, Sony Ericcson marketing director for UK and Ireland, David Hilton, gave a few insights into the device’s launch.

While the Xperia Play is an Android-powered phone that will be sold through mobile phone stores, Hilton says that game stores selling it is a possibility, too. “This will be the biggest marketing campaign we have had in the UK,” he revealed.

In the U.K., Xperia Play will come with Crash Bandicoot, The Sims 3, Fifa 10, Star Battalion, Tetris and Bruce Lee: Dragon Warriors pre-installed on the system. We assume Crash Bandicoot is the “legendary” title they hinted at previously.

As reported last month, 50 games encompassing both PS One software and original titles will be available for the device at launch, and Sony have hinted at franchises — not necessarily in the launch window — such as Assassin’s Creed, Dead Space, Guitar Hero and Battlefield coming to the device.

The GSM version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play first appeared on the FCC in early March, and today the CDMA version of the Play won FCC approval. Better yet, the FCC treated us to more internal photos of the device, which you can see below.

It doesn’t look like there are many differences between the GSM and CDMA versions of the Play. The CDMA Play even has a SIM card slot, even though CDMA devices don’t need a SIM card. It is possible that this is a 4G LTE SIM card slot, however neither Sony Ericsson nor Verizon has indicated that the Play will support LTE.

Internal photos of the device do give us a good look at its Elpida memory and Qualcomm power management chip. You can also see the device’s Synaptics touch pad, which is situated between the d-pad and main buttons.

We don’t have an official release date or pricing for the Verizon Play yet. However, leaked Verizon documents do list April 14th as a tentative launch date for the device.

Xperia PLAY Becomes Gameloft’s Best Performing Android Platform

While the Xperia PLAY did suffer various launch problems, from a “freight issue” to a mobile provider pulling out from the launch due to bugs, the platform’s biggest publisher, Gameloft, has announced that the phone is “already a top device” in terms of game sales, beating out tough competition from other Android phones.

In an extensive interview with PlayStation LifeStyle, Julian Stocker, Managing Director for Gameloft revealed:

From what we’ve seen already over this weekend – the sales are very good.

In the very first weekend its already a top device for us in terms of number of games being sold, which is pretty amazing actually, because that means it must have sold in a reasonable number already over the weekend.

He added that the launch difficulties don’t seem to have harmed the sales:

Looking at the sales we’ve seen, I don’t think there’s any problem; it has actually overtaken pretty much all the other Android devices already.

Custom ROMS now playable on Play, Arc, neo and Pro

Sony Ericsson has made good on its promise to allow owners of its Xperia range of Android handsets to load custom ROMs onto their devices.

The company has unveiled an official website, showing users how to unlock the boot loader for what it describes as "certain releases [i.e. devices]... from 2011 and onwards".

Word of warning

In short, this means users can now load custom ROMs, tweak the Android OS, and generally hack around with Xperia handsets such as Play, neo, Pro or Arc with little hassle, though the company takes no responsibility for the performance of the handset should they decide to do so.

"Sony Ericsson can then no longer guarantee the full functionality of your phone, and will not be responsible for any unsigned custom software being flashed to the phone after the boot loader is unlocked," the company says on its Developer World blog, adding that unlocking the boot loader voids a user's warranty.

"In the worst case, unlocking the boot loader will cause physical injuries or material damage, for example, due to the phone overheating. We strongly recommend that standard users NOT unlock the boot loader, as it is not needed."

There are also restriction in terms of devices. Sony Ericsson says you can’t unlock the boot loader if you have a SIM lock protected phone, and there are other restrictions depending on your market and the original configuration of your phone.

For those who do make the leap, however, Sony Ericsson has published a step by step guide to how to unlock the boot loader, with users needing access to the handset's IMEI number to access the unlocking key.
