iPad 2 to Come Out with Carbon Fiber Body?

A runaway rumor being taken as reality by some today is that the iPad 2 will sport a carbon fiber body shell instead of an aluminum encasing in an effort by Apple to make the tablet lighter and sleeker. But as John Gruber of Daring Fireball cautions, there is no concrete evidence to chalk this feature up as a given in the same way we can assuredly expect a front-facing camera for FaceTime chats on the 2nd-gen iPad.

John Gruber only mentioned in a footnote - yes, in a footnote - that he is “half-sure” about the iPad 2 getting a carbon fiber shell, a persistent suspicion that has lingered practically since the iPad was released one year ago. The actual blog post that started the carbon fiber discussion wasn't even about the removal of the iPad's aluminum shell. Rather, Gruber was aiming to address Engadget's report about there being no retina display on the iPad 2.

In speaking one set of iPad 2 rumors, it appears that another sprouted new legs. But as my MMi colleague Matt Savoca noted in his interesting iPad 2 rumor roundup last night, we're only one week away from being able to reconcile the rumors surrounding the iPad 2 with the actual reality of the tablet's refreshed features. Then, hopefully, we may all get a few days of respite before the iPad 3 speculation can begin in earnest.

This is a plain rumor since that’s what Gruber, the source, called it himself. Gruber, known best for authentic Apple reports and leaks has quietly slipped a rumor in a footnote of an Engadget bashing post. Gruber wrote the post to point out that there weren’t any eleventh hour changes like Engadget reported, in fact, the original reporting by Engadget was clearly wrong since nothing has changed in iPad 2 since January.

More interesting than the bashing was the footnote that Gruber quietly placed there for us. Perhaps, a safer way to report rumors he’s only half-sure about it so no one may bash him back?

Excerpt from the footnote can be read below:

I could publish things I’m only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don’t, because I’m only half-sure and I’ve only heard about it from second-hand sources who themselves are unsure about it. And even if I were to off-handedly mention such speculation, I’d do so in a footnote and take pains to emphasize the uncertain nature of the information and the second-hand status of the sources thereof. What I would never do is take a flyer and report uncertain speculation as a fact, and, if it wound up not panning out, chalk it up to Apple having changed things at the last moment rather than the report being flat-out wrong all along.

Based on the report, Apple’s second generation iPad is expected to come out with carbon fiber body instead of the usual aluminum. Using carbon fiber over aluminum may have a few advantages such as more resistance to water, however, carbon fiber may not resist temperature as much and may easily chip in situations where aluminum may only bend.

Since the second generation iPad is really thin and is supposed to be light-weight, Apple may actually choose carbon fiber over aluminum since it’s more effective in strength to weight ratio.

Apple To Surprise Everyone with Near Immediate Availability of iPad 2 Next Week

According to sources close to AppleInsider, Apple is going to surprise everyone next week with “near immediate” availability of the next-generation iPad to public.

Nuotrauka

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is preparing several of its operating segments to perform functions during the second half of next week that are representative of nothing short of a large scale, consumer-oriented product roll out (not just an announcement). And with official invitations to next Wednesday’s press briefing clearly indicating a focus on iPad, these people believe at least one version of the refreshed device will be in transit to retail outlets during that briefing.

Apple is going to announce iPad 2 in a media event, which is going to be held on Wednesday, March 2nd, at the famous Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

iPad 2 is expected to feature at least one camera for FaceTime video calls, Dual Core CPU and GPU, and will be thinner in size than its predecessor.

Apple CFO Tim Cook Widely Expected to Present iPad 2

Nuotrauka

Contrary to the hopes of many Apple fans and creatures of habit, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will not be on hand Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. Apple, on March 2nd, is expected to introduce the second generation iPad. As of this writing, however, reported plans call for Apple CFO and acting CEO Tim Cook to lead the presentation, effectively taking over the ceremonial duties typically reserved for Steve Jobs, who left the company he helped found last month on medical leave.

All eyes of late have squarely focused on Tim Cook's emerging role inside the secretive walls of the Cupertino, Calfornia-based tech-giant. Last week during Apple's annual shareholders meeting, Tim Cook noticeably sat in the "big seat" - only the second time in a decade that Steve Jobs missed the meeting. People who know Tim Cook, reports the LA Times, say he "has mastered running Apple's business while giving the creative team room to roam on the cutting edge of technology and design." And although the company has never publicly discussed a potential CEO succession plan, Cook is thought to be the only logical choice for the job in the event that a new, permanent CEO needs to be installed.

Apple's former chief talent officer Dan Walker believes that neither investors or gadget gurus need to fear if Tim Cook becomes the new big man in charge at Apple. "Tim is an incredible administrator and operational leader," Walker told the LA Times. "He is smart enough to accommodate creativity." But he's also not a showman. And it will be interesting to see how Cook attempts to wow his audience and the world beyond next week when he gives us our first official look at the iPad 2.

Ehhh, gaila. :o Vistiek Steve Jobs'as the best buvo, ir taip dabar nebepristatys... :o Again, ką padarysi dabar. :o
