At a Japanese press conference this weekend Square Enix confirmed that the 10th title in the huge JRPG series will be available for release next year. Officially dubbed Dragon Quest X Mezameshi Itstsu no Shuzoku (though expect the name to make an English transformation soon), the game will be an “online RPG” that utilises all the wondrous features of the Wii and the upcoming Wii U. Read on for more details.

Dragon Quest X is the next title in one of the biggest series in gaming; Dragon Quest players have been walking, battling monsters and running for 25 years now and the numerous games that have come before it have just about all been a success. No surprises then that Square Enix are looking to push the boundaries with their next title; with this being one of the first games to be officially announced for the Wii U it’s sure to garner a lot of attention over the coming months.

At the conference the developers revealed that X will be an online RPG in which quest hunters “form parties and co-exist with other players in an online world”. It certainly sounds more like an MMO with that description, which would be an interesting yet probably debatable direction for the series to take. We can at least hope that there is an offline mode, one that doesn’t require and internet connection preferably. You’ll be able to play Dragon Quest X with the plethora of Wii controllers – Wiimote, Nunchuck, classic and pro controllers, on top of this you’ll also be able to plug in a USB keyboard for extra quick communication. When the Wii-U is released it will support updated graphics and different play methods. The game will also feature some sort of connectivity with the Nintendo 3DS, this is likely to act as a touch panel much like the Wii U controller in that version of the game.

Unfortunately, there’s no word as of yet on a Playstation or Xbox version and it looks as though it will stay that way; this is clearly meant to be an exclusive title. Although considering the success of Dragon Quest VIII on Playstation 2 it is something of a surprise that Enix have taken this route.

Finally, it is being reported that official documents for the title state that it will have a TBA “usage fee” meaning Japanese fans will have to pay an MMO-like subscription fee. Whether this means subscriptions for the inevitable US and EU release is unclear as this was not the case with the previous Dragon Quest title.
