A source close to Rockstar has confirmed to us that the development studio will be releasing two additional dowloadable content packs for Grand Theft Auto IV, that both of them will be coming to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and that one of them will focus on the Irish families that Nico helped in the first episode. This confirms earlier rumors circulating around E3 that Rockstar was planning to release a DLC episode called Blood and a Four Leaf Clover.

 

Sources from outside of Rockstar have also independently confirmed this report. According to Kaufman Bros. analyst Todd Mitchell, Take-Two and Rockstar are expected to release these two brand new downloadable episodes for Grand Theft Auto IV in fiscal 2010, and are gearing up to release GTA V the following financial year.

 

Microsoft allegedly paid up to $50 million to support development of two exclusive downloadable episodes for the Xbox 360,The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Following the commercial success and high quality of The Lost and Damned, Rockstar wishes to extend the life of GTA IV as far as possible while it works on the true follow-up.

 

We just hope that by the time these downloadable episodes arrive on the PS3, we still have time to play them. Grand Theft Auto IV is no longer the only open-world shooter in town, and PS3 owners have tons of other high-quality releases in 2010 to look forward to, such as Rockstar's other exclusive project, Agent.

Liberty City Episodes coming to Xbox 360

We’ve just got some very interesting news from Rockstar Games: a new GTA game, of sorts, is coming to a store near you. This Spring Rockstar will be releasing, on the same disc, the two episodic downloads for GTA IV under the name GTA IV: The Episodes from Liberty City. So that means you will be able to rock up to a store and pick up the yet to be released GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony and GTA IV: The Lost and Damned in a matter of months.

 

Even more interesting is the news that you do not need to own GTA IV to be able to play the downloadable episodes. It shows extreme faith in Rockstar’s belief that the episodes have the narrative and gameplay depth to stand on their own two legs as genuine software releases – attached to, but not reliant on their big brother. This also opens the door to the 300,000 (50% of the install base) Xbox 360 owning Australians who have never taken their console online to play the episodes for the first time.

 

The announcement does, however, reveal an important insight into the next-generation of gaming. As much as the console manufacturers, developers and hardcore gamers would like us all to believe we are on the cusp of entering the digital era, clearly we are not. Publishers are still seeing the need to release their download-only content in retail form eventually simply because the potential audience there and resulting revenue demand that they must.

 

This release will fill an important financial gap for Rockstar Games, who would have been looking income-lite in the last quarter of this year following the delay of Red Dead Redemption until 2010. It does pose interesting questions though: how much of this is Microsoft's doing and what % of the revnue will they demand. And now that the episodes are in a physical form, can be ported to the PS3? Perhaps the deal was only for digital distribution... unlikely, but it makes you wonder.

 

No additional information is forthcoming at this time. Our expectation would be a RRP in the vicinity of AU$49 and we like late October as a release date – but we’ll keep you posted for official news when it becomes available.
