All About Peace Walker's Sound

 

If there's something you hear in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker that you like, it's probably Kazuki Muraoka's fault.

 

Muraoka's been a sound guy at Kojima Productions ever since the very first Metal Gear Solid, and he served as sound director for the Peace Walker project. "I didn't do any actual composing," he said in a Famitsu interview this week. "My role was to direct the staff to create this sort of song for that sort of scene in the game. I also handled direction and checking for the sound effects, like the AI weapons' footsteps and so on."

 

Doing sound for Metal Gear is tough under any circumstance, but the Artist Demo cutscenes in Peace Walker posed a particularly striking challenge to Muraoka. "They are basically still images," he noted, "so creating the sound for those required a lot of imagination to keep them from being basic show-and-tell. For example, you're never completely still when you're talking -- you're always moving your body one way or the other. If someone was sitting in a chair, we had to put the sound of the chair creaking into the scenes, being careful not to make them too overwrought."

 

Does that mean Muraoka's team does all of their own foley work for the sound effects? "We do use sound-effect libraries for some stuff," he explained, "but they won't cover a lot of the situations you'd find in MGSPW -- running through a jungle barefoot, for example. We have to create those ourselves -- laying out sand on the floor, placing wadded-up balls of cassette tape on top of that, and stamping around for a while."

 

However, as the sound director put it, the biggest challenge for Peace Walker wasn't in making the sound effects, but cramming it all into one UMD. "There's a huge amount of data to deal with, so we did have to adjust things to make it all fit," he said. "We lowered the quality on the communicator transmissions, which fits with the setting anyway, and we made the musical tracks short and simple while making sure they didn't loop around too obviously."

 

Was it hard? "It was actually a lot of fun for the staff, because they were putting so many of their own ideas into it," Muraoka concluded. "Some of the crew has been here since the original MGS, so they're used to how we do things around here. Peace Walker may be on a portable system, but it's still a post-MGS4 game, and there's no way we can take a step backward from that. Nobody here compromises."

 

Peace Walker is due out for the PSP June 8 in America and June 17 in Europe.

That's actually an unfair comparison, though, as the above figure is for the gameplay version of Snake. During event scenes, shown in the above image, Snake's polygon count doubles, putting him at the level of a mid boss tank.

It's part MGS, part Monster Hunter and part Pokemon - and it's even got a bit of SimCity to it.

Hideo Kojima has revealed that Pokemon and SimCity were both major influences on the gameplay of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

 

Slightly bonkers? Yes - but the plan's obviously paid off, with CVG sister mag PSM3 awarding Peace Walker 91 per cent in its review.

 

Kojima added that "nearly everything you can do with a portable system is in this game".

 

"I can hardly ponder over it all," he told PSM3. "We had to shift the release date as a result, otherwise we'd have never had time to test it all. I've never experienced a game production like this before in my career."

 

The title is released on PSP on June 18 in the UK.

 

"Until now Metal Gear Solid has always been about 'Tactical Espionage Action', but not in Peace Walker," added Kojima.

 

"Here it's about 'Tactical Espionage Operation' - there's that nuance of running and maintaining Big Boss' army while handling sneaking missions.

 

Kojima admitted that "when you look at the visuals, it's not as amazing as a PS3 game.

 

However, he commented: "You won't 'get' it until you play it. It's like no game before. It's part MGS, part Monster Hunter and part Pokemon - and it's even got a bit of SimCity to it."
