Sony adds mobile billing option to PlayStation Store, SEN

 

In addition to credit cards, pre-paid giftcards and PayPal, the PlayStation Store and Sony Entertainment Network now support a "mobile billing" option for buying Hatsune Miku DLC, episodes of Teen Wolf, Music Unlimited subscriptions and whatever else the kids are into these days.

 

When adding funds to your virtual wallet through either the PS3's PlayStation Store or SEN's Account Management site, selecting the "Use Mobile" option will initiate the procedure. After receiving and confirming a text message (standard carrier rates apply, natch), the amount added to your wallet will either be tacked onto your phone bill, or deducted from your pre-paid phone account if that's how your plan swings.

In an interview with EDGE Online, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s CEO Jim Ryan has explained the Gaikai situation, stating that it will launch at first in North America in 2014 on PS4, before heading to Vita and even PS3.

 

He said, speaking about why Gaikai wasn’t talked about during Sony’s Gamescom conference:

 

 

Yeah sure and I’ll tell you why is wasn’t touched upon last night. So the plan is to begin with North America next year and the plan is to provide a streaming service that will allow for PS3 content initially to be streamed to firstly PS4 then PS Vita and then PS3.

 

Ryan went on to say “that will happen in 2014 in North America initially” before highlighting the poor broadband speeds in Europe, which he says is “on the roadmap” for Gaikai, though they don’t quite have a timeline for it yet. Since Gamescom is for primarily the European audience, that’s why it wasn’t mentioned during the conference.

 

He followed up that “there’s just a few bumps along the road that need to be ironed out” in regards to the European launch and that while it’ll be “early-ish” 2014 for the US, he has “nothing to say yet” on a date for Europe.

◦If both the PS4 and the new PS Vita models were released simultaneously everywhere, there would be an excessive burden on customers.

◦Sony still consider Japan a key market. The delayed release of the PS4 was simply a result of the analysis of the market situation of each region and a matter of distributing resources in the best way.

◦Yoshida-san feels that the PS Vita TV is a “Challenging product” and he was looking forward to the day of the announcement.

◦The project to create the PS Vita TV started around the summer of 2011. Since then a lot of trial and error has been done in house before it finally took the shape we see today.

◦There are currently 100 PS Vita titles that will work with the PS Vita TV, and a “significant percentage” of future titles will work with it as well.

◦According to Yoshida-san, the PS Vita TV is the perfect introductory machine for those that can’t or don’t want to buy a PS4 yet, but want a console that offers games and video services at the same time.
