With more and more questions being asked about The Last Guardian, Sony has started to become a bit more open with the game’s development.

 

Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida has once again said that the team experienced “technical issues”. So while it may not seem as though progress has been made on the project, Yoshida insists “there is a lot of work going into creating the title.”

 

“The team is still working on it very hard. There are certain technical issues they’ve been working on. That’s the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn’t seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title.”

 

According to Yoshida, The Last Guardian had been playable. Once the technical issues came into view, however, “the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done.”

 

“We had the game playable. At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done.”

 

Regarding questions concerning the possibility of The Last Guardian slipping into next-gen, Yoshida stated, ”The game is developed on PS3.”

“The team is still there in SCE Japan Studio, [Fumito] Ueda-san is still there, but we are still waiting for the time to reintroduce it.”

Spike TV’s PlayStation 4 All Access launch event featured a short interview with Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida. During it, host Geoff Keighley asks him about The Last Guardian.

 

“It looks pretty,” he said.

 

Yoshida said he played it. But did he play it with a DualShock 4 or DualShock 3?

 

“I don’t recall,” Yoshida teased.

 

The Last Guardian was first announced for PlayStation 3 at E3 2009. It’s long been speculated the game has since been moved to PlayStation 4.

Yoshida said that when the game was announced in 2009 for PS3, they thought they were making good progress.

“But in 2011 the progress became super slow. There were lots of technical issues. The game was not performing at speed. The video we showed, the trailer on PS3, was specced up. The game was running at a much lower frame rate. Some features were still missing.

“So it was clear that the team had to make a compromise in terms of features and number of characters so while they were taking time, the engineering team ported the code on the SPU [processors of the PS3] to improve the performance, but it was taking lots of time.

“But, in the meantime PS4 arrived, the development environment was available. So in 2012 it became apparent we should move it to PS4 to achieve the visual [ideal.]”
