Ghost of Tsushima

About

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world, action-adventure game set in feudal Japan.

Description

Overview

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world, action-adventure game, developed by Sucker Punch and produced by Sony, exclusively for the Playstation 4. The game is set to be released July 17, 2020.

Plot

Set on Tsushima Island, in the year 1274, at the time of the First Mongol Invasion of Japan. The Mongols, led by General Khotun Khan, have invaded Tsushima and slaughtered most of the samurai there with unconventional military tactics. Jin Sakai, a samurai and one of the few survivors of the initial attack, realizes that his knowledge of war is useless, and therefore must learn how to fight like a dishonorable Ghost to stop the Mongols before they reach the mainland of Japan.

Gameplay

Players can tackle most missions in one of two ways: as the honorable Samurai, Jin can challenge enemy leaders to duels, and use multiple forms of sword and bow combat to bring death to multiple enemies. As the dishonorable Ghost, Jin can make use of different items to distract enemies, quietly assassinate them, or even make lesser Mongols tremble in fear of his reputation.

Outside of combat, players can be guided by the wind to their objective, and by following NPCs and other creatures can find items and sidequests such as shrines or clothing dyes.

The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan--until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But, honorable tactics won't lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting--the way of the Ghost--as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.

Tsushima is going to be stealth open world

Mongol invasion of 1274

EDIT:

Tsushima was an important trade center during this period. After the Toi invasion, private trade started between Goryeo, Tsushima, Iki, and Kyūshū, but halted during the Mongol invasions of Japan between 1274 and 1281. The Goryeosa, a history of the Goryeo dynasty, mentions that in 1274, Korean troops of the Mongol army led by Kim Bang-gyeong that included many Korean soldiers killed a great number of people on the islands.

In a developer diary released in October, members of Sucker Punch said that picking a feudal Japan setting for its next project was an easy decision. Once the creatives posited the Mongol invasion as the main driving force, it all clicked into place.

Art director Jason Connell described Ghost of Tsushima as an “action-stealth game”, with the goal of championing player choice in a much bigger way this time around.

“We really want you to have that choice of ‘Hey, that cool bamboo forest over there, I really wanna check it out. I wanna head in that direction and see what it is.’ There’s no waypoint. There’s nothing that says ‘Go here and look at this bamboo forest,'” said Connell.

“Hopefully, we’re presenting something that’s beautiful and exotic – that’s different than the current place that you might be in – and that will come at a world choice. That’s your adventure choice.”
